Thales UK MOD contract will boost air defence capability
On 25 October 2018 Defence Procurement Minister Stuart Andrew announced that the Future Air Defence Availability Project (F-ADAPT) had been awarded to Thales UK, during his visit to Thales’ Belfast base. The MOD contract, valued at £93 million, will secure over 100 jobs in the city.
Aerospace tender will improve defence ability
The F-ADAPT project aims to enhance High Velocity and Lightweight Multirole Missile systems that have been designed to intercept a wide range of air and surface threats, including enemy drones, helicopters and armoured vehicles.
This aerospace tender will not only provide the UK Armed Forces with a potent defensive ability, it will also provide employment opportunities in Northern Ireland.
Defence Procurement Minister Stuart Andrew said:
“Defence investment benefits every corner of our United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland is no exception. This £93 million deal will secure over 100 local jobs and demonstrates the ingenuity and skill of Northern Irish industry.”
Northern Ireland was recently praised by the Government for playing an integral role in UK defence, providing over 4000 regulars and reserves to the Armed Forces and supporting over 600 industry jobs.
Future Air Defence Availability Project
F-ADAPT is currently managed by the MOD’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) procurement agency.
DE&S Director Weapons, Richard Smart, said:
“The F-ADAPT is crucial in safeguarding our Very Short-Range Air Defence capability and the team at DE&S has worked collaboratively with industry to deliver the enhancements needed to ensure this project continues to support our troops for years to come.”
