Sovereign Parade commissions cadets after year of intensive training

His Royal Highness, Prince Harry represented Her Majesty The Queen at the Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The Parade marked the completion of a year’s intensive training for 162 officer cadets from the United Kingdom and 25 officer cadets from 20 overseas countries.  The United Kingdom officer cadets were officially commissioned as officers in the British Army at midnight on the 15th December and those from overseas will return to their countries’ armies.  Also on Parade were the officer cadets from the junior and intermediate terms.

The day began with a Commissioning Service in the Academy’s Royal Memorial Chapel for the senior term officer cadets and their parents and the Parade itself commences with the officer cadets later marching on to the parade square.

During the parade His Royal Highness presented the awards for the top performing cadets:

  • Sword of Honour (considered by the Commandant to be the best cadet of the intake) – Senior Under Officer Charles Rex commissioning into the RIFLES
  • International Sword of Honour (considered by the Commandant to be the best international cadet of the intake) – Officer Cadet Milosh Trendevski from Republic of Macedonia
  • Queen’s Medal (for the best overall results in military, academic and practical studies) – Officer Cadet George Harrison commissioning into the RIFLES
  • International Award (for the international cadet with the best overall results in military, academic and practical studies) – Officer Cadet Tang Ming Dong from Peoples Republic of China

In time honoured tradition, the parade concluded with the commissioning officer cadets marching off the parade square up the steps and through the grand entrance to Old College followed by the Academy Adjutant, Major Dominic Alkin of the Grenadier Guards riding Royal Blue.
