Rheinmetall to supply 2,200 new trucks to Bundeswehr

Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles has joined a framework agreement with Bundeswehr, to deliver a fleet of new vehicles, securing its place as one of the world’s foremost suppliers of systems and equipment for ground forces.

This major project will see the German military vehicle fleet overhauled and modernised, with Rheinmetall supplying thousands of its state-of-the-art HX2 vehicles.

Worth some €900M, the order covers seven-years of a framework contract and the supply of 2,271 HX2 family vehicles. An initial lot of 558 trucks has been agreed, at some €200M, including tools and training support. Due to be delivered 20178-2021, the key components for the vehicles, such as engines, axels, transmissions and build-ons, will all be made in Germany, with assembly carried out at the Rheinmetall plant in Vienna.

The vehicles have been carefully selected to provide interoperability advantages during worldwide operations, with RMMV vehicles used by numerous other nations including UK, Australia, New Zealand and Denmark. Norway and Sweden have recently placed substantial orders with RMMV as well.

The program sees existing KAT I generation trucks replaced. Some of these vehicles have been used for some 40 years, and no longer meet current standards due to their advanced age, with associated spare parts and lifecycle costs rising.

The latest generation of HX2 vehicles from Rheinmetall provide state-of-the-art equipment, developed through decades of experience building and servicing military vehicles.

HX2 numbers among the world’s most widely used military trucks, with abundant operational experience, and over 10,000 in operation.

The HX2 family comes in variants ranging from 4×4 to 10×10, configured for a multitude of different missions: cargo trucks and heavy-duty recovery vehicles, tankers and system platforms as well as folding-road and bridge-laying systems. The engines that power these trucks are designed for outputs of up to 680 HP.

Adhering to a strict military-off-the-shelf (MOTS) approach, RMMV uses proven, reliably modified mass production components in the HX2 family, specially designed to meet military requirements. This results in made-to-measure military vehicles that deliver maximum cost-effectiveness.
